Here an accent as apostrophe, there another accent as apostrophy – as long as there are more than necessary…
Though the pub (this is an announcement for its opening) is actually called “Bayrisch’s Eck”, if I remember correctly.
(4/2008)
It’s nothing new that the rather strict Bavarian smoking ban in restaurants and pubs made many innkeepers declare their pubs “smoker clubs” to circumvent the ban.
Attributing smoking to the “Bavarian tavern culture”, as restaurant association & co. like to do it, is already somewhat stranger, less understandable.
But a “Ristorante & Pizzeria” running an ad with the following lines (my translation) in a local weekly newspaper is something I don’t really understand, content-wise.
For preservation of the Italian dining and smoker culture, entry to our restaurant is from now on restricted to members only.
Naturally all guests, including non-smokers, who wish to keep visiting us will receive a corresponding membership card for free in our restaurant.
We hereby ask for your understanding and are happy to welcome you as our guests again.
Now I’m wondering:
They certainly don’t get my understanding for this flimsy campaing; at any rate, I consider a smoking ban in restaurants(!) good.
* Might be a side effect due to the lack of possibilities of comparison there in Ilmmünster, though.
Not that I wouldn’t like my low-price cellphone provider blau.de (=“blue”), on the contrary – but if you combine and build upon what’s in their latest newsletter I received today, this post’s title may be the result:
Main news item is the price reduction from 9.9 to 9 cents per voice minute and SMS, presented by their two blue sock hand puppets (my translation): “From April 1 on, I pay only 9 cents per minute and SMS in the general tariff.” – “Great, then you save even more, a full 10 percent!”
Well, they got it wrong: You save 0.9 cents, that’s 0.9 / 9.9 = 1 / 11 = 0.090909… ≈ 9.1 %. So rather nearly 10 %.
Items 2 and 3 in the newsletter are the accessories tip of a UMTS PC card and the WAP tip “Google to go” – and then the ringsound download tip for this unspeakable, unbearable, unfeasible, un–whatever Schnuffel Kuschel-Song (“cuddle song”), number 1 for weeks in the official German single charts. “Get the spring hit on your cellphone”. Aaaaargh!
Quote (translated) from Schnuffel: Germany in cuddling fever (laut.de, German) (via 49 Suns)
“Number one for a virtual cuddly toy singing about a carrot. Of course, it can’t get more moronic, but we also thought that about the Crazy Frog. […] The song itself (music & text: Jamba) is a cheap large-hall disco stomper with a text you usually find on fall-asleep CDs babies. But that’s okay, since Jamba is a company that makes money out of bullshit. And it’s legitimate because people buy that bullshit. And Jamba doesn’t claim it were art, let alone music.”
At least, Canon has room for improvements here. Of course it isn’t that much of a hassle to maybe insert two CDs to get the correct one, but it’s anything but optimal…
Given that you’d want a particular language, which if these two “EOS DIGITAL Solution Disks” would you pick? Do you spot the difference?
digitalkamera.de currently writes (in German – this is my translation):
“Birth of Sony T300, S750, W110, W120, W130, W150 and W170
In the middle of the night, they have been born, the Sony septuplets – and they’re doing fine. Among them are five identical twins: […]”
They mean the W models which differ only little:
W110: 4x zoom, 7,2 megapixels,
W120: 4x zoom, 7,2 MP,
W130: 4x zoom, 8,1 MP,
W150: 5x zoom starting at 30 mm, 8,1 MP,
W170: 5x zoom starting at 28 mm, 10,1 MP.
But, erm, then they are no longer twins – or do you nowadays count like that: 2=twins, 3=three twins, 4=four twins, …?
