Fewer unsolicited calls

About half a year ago, I published some statistics about 102 unsolicited phone calls – now it’s time for an update with the data from the rest of the year. The number of such calls to me clearly decreased: to about one third, from 102 in weeks 4-29 to 31 in weeks 30-52 (labeled “~H1” and “~H2” in the following diagrams, because they don’t exactly correspond to the half years).

Maybe thanks to the nice message (implemented with my FRITZ!Box 7170 and my ISDN phone with answering machine) for callers who do not transmit their caller ID which says (translated)

“Good day. You are calling without transmitting your number. Since this is typical for unwanted commercial calls, you are directly – without audible ringing – directed to this answering machine. Please enable your caller ID transmission, or leave a message so you can be called back. Thank you.”

one or more cold call centers kicked me out of their database.

Of course the “no number => unwanted” conclusion isn’t always 100% sure, but who calls me legitimately can leave a message or try again with caller ID – these (few) cases have been taken into account here.

Here’s a breakdown by weekday, time of day, and calendar week:

Space-time problem

Or better: Zeit(=time) space problem, ;) because I had to find space for the 20-volume ZEIT lexicon – which is already almost three years old, but now, as the WELT will soon release their own lexicon, of course at a discount for 139,- (in the “bild der wissenschaft shop”), i.e. basically for 1 cent per page (and thus clearly cheaper than the competition, and with more pages, more words, but less images and without DVD-ROM).

Pictured here not yet on the bookshelf, but on the floor in front of my comic shelf:

Help, the monster is loose!

Aaaahh! A few days ago, it appeared for the first time, this *gulp* horrid monster with its glowing eyes and the *shiver* terrible mouth! And almost every evening it briefly looks around. It will surely catch me on Halloween! *shriek*

Look at this sh- shocking photo:

Bye, e.on…

Lago di Poschiavo As indicated here (“Electricity tariff increase”, 15 Oct), my electricity will soon come no longer from the normal local provider E.ON Bayern, but instead (due to the cancellation period, starting 1 Jan; cancellation confirmation arrived today) from Trianel – and then “naturally” the “eco” way.

Costs a tiny bit more than the standard electricity (85% non-regenerative) at current tariff, but noticeable less than at the future tariff (after the announced increase from 1 Jan 2008). And even less than E.ON’s eco electricity.

So my juice will then – don’t let beverage testers hear that! – come to 84% from the water of Lago di Poschiavo (photo from picswiss.ch) and the rest from other water, wind, biomass and a touch of solar energy.

Of course the best electricity is still that which is not consumed needlessly (e.g. standby)…

Front door missionaries

This morning, about 10 o’clock, via Heute vormittag ca. 10 Uhr via intercom system, an almost purring-dreamy female voice(*):

“Good day, my name is […]. We found out how much the Holy Scripture means to us…”

My translation, and not necessarily verbatim – I shouldn’t have waited that long with this post… By the way, that was only the second time someone like that rang my doorbell.

“Thank God” that wasn’t at an “ungodly hour”…

(*) Unfortunately not “my (boy)friend Anghela;)
